Start with the job you want done
| Decision | iCloud Photos | Vaultary local vault |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Keep the Photos library current across signed-in devices. | Keep imported private files in a separate encrypted app library. |
| Access | Apple device and account access settings. | Separate vault credential, with optional biometric choices. |
| Encryption | Encrypted in transit and at rest; Photos gains end-to-end encryption with Advanced Data Protection. | AES-256-GCM for vault contents, names and index. |
| Changes and copies | Library changes can synchronize to other devices. | Imported originals remain separate until you deliberately manage them. |
| Recovery planning | Apple Account and ADP recovery requirements apply. | Retain an encrypted archive and its required recovery token. |
What Advanced Data Protection changes
Apple’s iCloud data-security overview explains which categories use end-to-end encryption with Advanced Data Protection. Photos is included, with documented metadata and sharing exceptions. Do not assume that every shared album or public-link workflow has the same protection as the private library.
ADP is an Apple Account setting with its own supported-device and recovery requirements. Review those directly with Apple before changing it.
Why a separate vault can still be useful
A separate library can keep selected photos, videos and documents out of ordinary Photos browsing and behind a distinct credential. It is an organization and access choice as well as an encryption choice. The local vault does not need a company account.
See the private photo library and consider a shared device-passcode situation. Keep source copies and exports in mind when choosing what belongs where.
Synchronization is not a substitute for every backup
Apple explains that data already synchronized through iCloud Photos is not duplicated in daily iCloud Backup. A synchronized deletion and a dated archive have different recovery behavior. Review retention and make a tested recovery plan for the copies you cannot replace.
Compare encrypted archives and sync before retiring an old device or removing a source original.
