Try airplane mode before you need it

Offline should mean you can unlock and read stored originals without a network connection. Test it after restarting the app and the phone, using an item that has never been opened in the current session. A preview that remains cached is weaker evidence than opening the original file. Some apps keep only thumbnails locally and fetch full files from a server.

Separate storage from services

An app can store media locally while still contacting Apple for purchases, checking updates or using other network services. “No media server” and “no network traffic” are different claims. Read the privacy policy and look for a clear statement about where files, diagnostics and purchase information go. Network independence should be described by function, not by an absolute slogan.

Local-only makes device loss important

If your only usable copy is on one phone, losing that phone can mean losing the files. Ordinary device backup may help, but its exact coverage depends on configuration, app behavior and available storage. Apple distinguishes iCloud Backup from data already synchronized with iCloud. Do not infer that every local file is backed up simply because iCloud is enabled.

Run a realistic acceptance test

With synthetic files, import a photo, video and document. Disconnect the network, restart, unlock and open each original. Export a recovery archive and restore it elsewhere using the documented process. Record which actions need internet. Vaultary is being developed for offline vault use with user-controlled encrypted exports. That direction does not imply automatic cloud backup, and the website does not claim a shipped or independently audited product.
