Define the boundary first

A separate photo password is useful only when it prevents access that the ordinary device credential would otherwise allow. Apple’s documented Hidden album authentication uses the device’s available authentication methods. It is not a place to configure an arbitrary, unrelated password for a particular photo collection. Check your current iOS settings because available controls change across releases.

Ask how the secret protects the files

An app might put a password screen in front of ordinary files, or it might use a secret to unlock encrypted content. These are different designs. Look for an explanation of file encryption, key derivation, metadata protection and recovery. A short numeric code is easy to type but has fewer possibilities than a longer passphrase. Device controls and rate limits can help; neither makes a weak secret equivalent to a strong one.

Test fallback paths

If an app offers biometrics, learn what happens when they fail. Does it require the vault passphrase, accept the device passcode, or offer a reset that returns the files? Convenience and separation can conflict. Try the documented recovery procedure with sample files before importing material you cannot replace. Never assume that a reset button preserves encrypted files.

Keep the recovery plan separate too

Write down which credential opens the phone, which opens the vault, and which opens an exported archive. Store the necessary recovery material somewhere you can reach if the phone is lost. Do not put the only copy inside the same vault. Vaultary’s proposed independent-passphrase approach is being built around this distinction; availability and device acceptance remain release gates. For now, use this checklist to evaluate any app you can actually install.
