Start with Apple’s instructions for your device

Apple’s repair preparation page is the source for current requirements. Steps differ for an in-person visit and sending a device away, and software changes can alter the process. Use the instructions that match your iPhone and service method.

Apple advises you not to give someone your Apple Account password, device passcode or account security details. For software support that requires entry, follow Apple’s guidance and remain present. Check the official instructions rather than relying on an old checklist about Find My or service modes.

Make private-file recovery independent of this phone

Retain a usable encrypted Vaultary archive and its recovery token somewhere accessible without the device being repaired. Perform a practice restore with replaceable files before you have to rely on it. A credential that exists only inside the phone will not help if that phone is replaced or unavailable.

Use the encrypted backup checklist. Keep the working original until the restored copies are usable.

Review copies outside the vault

Check Photos, Files, mail attachments and downloaded copies separately. Confirm what is synchronized through Apple services and what is included in your chosen backup. Avoid deleting an irreplaceable source just to make the phone look tidy before a repair.

Apple explains what iCloud Backup includes. Data already synchronized through services such as iCloud Photos has different backup coverage from local app data.

At the handover

  • Confirm the backup and recovery material are accessible.
  • End any open vault session.
  • Follow the current service-preparation instructions.
  • Keep credentials private and use the service process Apple documents.
