Inventory the collection before you move it
Know which photos, videos, documents and notes you want to carry over. Keep a working original while you prepare the archive. A file count helps you notice an incomplete move, but counts alone cannot prove that the contents remain readable.
Choose a few representative items: an ordinary image, a longer video with audio and a multipage document. These give you a practical way to check the archive and the destination.
Keep the archive and credential available
An encrypted archive preserves vault data; the separate recovery-token path provides the credential needed to recover it. Store both where you can reach them without the old iPhone. Protect their access according to the sensitivity of the collection.
Read the recovery requirements and use the restore checklist. This is a manual archive plan; do not assume that an account sign-in or a remembered pattern automatically transfers a device-bound secret.
Check what your Apple backup covers
Apple distinguishes iCloud and computer backups. Synchronized iCloud Photos data is handled differently from a daily device backup. Computer backup encryption is a choice you must check. Use the current backup instructions for your setup instead of assuming that every private app file is covered.
Verify before clearing the old device
- Open restored photos and inspect their detail.
- Play representative videos, including audio and later sections.
- Read the first and last pages of important documents.
- Check the files you need before removing the old working copies.
Keep a readable exit plan when changing vault apps as well as phones.
